Got the basics down? Have a feel for your job? Still want to get better?
There are many factors that create great ballista players.
★ understanding of the job ★ understanding of game mechanics ★ proficient item usage ★ initiative and decision making ★ timing ★ communication ★ patience ★ effective WS and JA usage ★ gear ★ &really, there's so much more.
When you think you have all of it down, there's actually so much more, especially if you're playing with real people, unlike versing an NM or FFXI mob.
The most important thing to have in order to be capable of improving, is the right mindset - for anything. Before anyone can improve on anything, that person must be aware of where they stand corresponding to other players. A new player who's only played ballista once or twice, will not have the same understanding or reflexes than someone who's effectively proved that he or she understands and is able to put that understanding into action. If said new player was in denial about where he stood and thought he or she was the "greatest of them all," that mindset restricts any sort of improvement.
That being said, look towards talking or receiving advice from more experienced players. An experienced player is someone who can explain and put the explanation into action. It's one thing to say, "provoke when ___" but it's another thing if you don't actually do it.

Two great people to ask for advice regarding anything ballista are Evviva and Vyi. They both have gained a lot of credibility through their commitment, understanding, and actual gameplay, so if you're actually looking to improve, then I highly suggest that you talk to them.
